SimplyThick Causes Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) In Premature And Full Term Babies, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Cautions

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has expanded its warning regarding SimplyThick and the development of necrotizing enterocolitis or NEC.Back in May 2011, the FDA issued an advisory warning consumers of SimplyThick’s risk to premature infants and the development of NEC.

Necrotizing enterocolitis is when there is infection and inflammation of the intestine, causing the lining of the intestinal wall to fall off, leading to death of the intestinal tissue.

After issuing the original warning, the FDA continued to conduct extensive reviews of reports potentially linked to the use of SimplyThick. It was noted that approximately 24 full term infants developed NEC after being administered SimplyThick in addition to 21 premature babies. Fourteen of the babies required surgery and seven of the infants that developed NEC died.

SimplyThick is an ingredient added to formula or breast milk to thicken it up and is often used to help persistent spitting up or regurgitation. The FDA also indicates that SimplyThick is used in older children and adults with swallowing problems. The agency is now extending this warning because they believe that parents, caregivers and doctors will all benefit from this additional information.

If your infant or child developed NEC while using SimplyThick or if there was a delay in diagnosing and treating your baby's NEC, you may be eligible for compensation.
