On May 26, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of approximately 1 million pool and spa drain covers due to an incorrect rating that the covers received for handling the flow of water through the cover. As a consequence, there is a risk that swimmers and bathers, especially children, could experience entrapment. While it may be shocking for parents and other consumers to learn that not all pool covers prevent drownings, it is even more frightening to learn that the pool covers themselves could cause drownings.
Although no injuries regarding the covers have been reported, consumers are being advised to stop using the recalled pool and spa covers right away. Pool owners/operators and consumers who have one of the recalled pool or spa drain covers are being cautioned to contact the manufacturer to get a replacement or retrofit immediately.
Manufacturers recalling pool and spa covers along with dates sold include:
- A&A Manufacturing (Dec. 2008 – Apr. 2011)
- AquaStar Pool Products Inc. (Dec. 2008 – Apr.2011)
- Color Match Pool Fittings (Dec. 2008 – Apr. 2011)
