I Just Witnessed First Hand How Texting and Driving Can Cause a Serious Car Accident

Just to put your mind at ease, I am not texting this blog as I am driving. I have arrived home safely, unlike the driver who was too busy texting and failed to realize that the driver in front of him had stopped.

Out of the corner of my eye, all I saw was him looking down and texting on his phone. I saw the car in front of him slam on his breaks. I heard the screeching of the breaks. Sadly, the guy driving and texting behind him did not. He did not even hear my calls out my window to look up and stop – his radio was too loud. I tried, and even put my life at risk by taking my eyes off of the road, but that distracted driver didn't hear me and caused a major multi-vehicle accident.

I could not see if he was wearing a seatbelt, because after he hit the SUV in front of him, his car folded up like an accordion and I could not see the driver. As a medical professional, I wanted to stop, but couldn't. It was rush hour on I-95 and I was in the lane that was traveling at about 50 miles per hour, not in the lane of traffic that came to an abrupt halt due to the car accident. If I stopped abruptly, most likely I would have caused another accident. The only thing I could do was to catch up to and beep at the Pennsylvania State Trooper vehicle that was about 100 yards ahead of me. All I could do was inform them of the serious car accident about a mile back. I saw the Trooper radio in the accident and then get off of the next exit to turn around and go back. The remainder of my ride home was just filled with thoughts that I hope everyone involved in that car accident was OK, even the kid that was texting and driving. I hope he is OK and then will spend the rest of his time educating others on the dangers of texting and driving and will never do it again.

Just as I, as a driver today, wish I could have prevented a serious car accident, I couldn't. I tried. He just did not hear me.
