Water Slides Can Cause Serious Injuries and Even Death
Water slides are popular attractions at most water parks or resort amusement parks. But while these rides can be thrilling and provide relief from the summer heat, accidents can, and do, happen. An improperly designed, improperly maintained, improperly watched, improperly filled, or defective waterslide design can cause riders to collide with each other, suddenly stop, bang their head, be ejected or thrown over the side of the slide or fall from great heights.
Here are just a few examples of recent water park water slide accidents.
- A 19-year-old girl died after hitting her head while on a water slide at Sun Splash water park in Mesa, Arizona.
- A section of the Master Blaster water slide at Big Splash water park in Tulsa, Oklahoma gave way while an 11-year-old girl was still on it.
- A 14-year-old girl drowned at the end of the Shot Gun Falls water slide at Gillian’s Wonderland Pier and Island Water Park in Ocean City, New Jersey
- An 8-year-old boy came to a sudden stop inside a high-speed water slide. The ride sensors indicated that the boy did not exit the slide, but ignored the signal and allow another rider to enter the water slide. The second rider collided with the boy, causing injuries.
In addition to water slide defects or operator errors, the areas surrounding water slides or water parks can also cause slip and fall injuries, spinal cord injuries, paraplegia, quadriplegia, traumatic brain injuries, or even death. Many of the surfaces surrounding the water slides or wave pools, including the steps, are going to get wet or slippery from the water. The property owners must make certain that those areas are properly treated with non-skid materials, and free from mold, slime or suntan lotions that can cause dangerous slips and falls.
