Some Pool And Spa Drain Cover Testing Went Right Down The Drain

On March 18, 2011, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) released a statement indicating that they are investigating the adequacy of testing procedures to make sure pool and spa drain covers prevent drain entrapment. So far, the investigation has revealed that some of the testing protocols used by some laboratories are inadequate. The inadequate testing led to the approval of faulty drain covers that do not comply with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act. (P&SSAct). Pool and Spa covers that are inadequate or faulty, with inaccurate flow ratings, fail to prevent the hidden danger of being sucked into a drain.

On December 19, 2007, the Pool and Spa Safety Act was enacted by Congress and signed by President Bush. Under that law, all pools and spas must have compliant drain covers and safety vacuum release systems (SVRS), which can detect a blockage in the drain and immediately shut the suction off. This law was enacted to prevent drain entrapments or a person becoming stuck in a drain; forceful removal of the internal organs, usually the bowel or intestines; forceful removal of the scalp; amputations; drowning; and other injuries including death due to the strong drain suction.
