Jim Beasley Jr. (center) flanked by boxing promoter Don King and Philadelphia DJ Jerry Blavat, hand out holiday turkeys in South Philadelphia a few days before Thanksgiving, 2006.
For years, Jim Beasley Sr. held an annual Christmas party for orphans where lawyers dressed up as Santa and handed out toys and clothes. Beasley also bought hundreds of air-conditioners and gave them away to people who couldn't afford them.
When Beasley won his $8 million verdict against the Philadelphia Housing Authority for the deaths by fire of six children, he went out and bought hundreds of smoke alarms and donated them to PHA, so there would be no more needless tragedies.
The greatest recipient of Jim Beasley's generosity was his alma mater, Temple University. Beasley donated $20 million to Temple's Law School, subsequently renamed the Beasley School of Law. The gift was earmarked to provide full scholarships for highly qualified but economically disadvantaged law students, as well as to endow several faculty chairs at the law school. From 1998 to 2007, Beasley Scholarships were awarded to 179 Temple law students, for a total of $3,780,004, or an average of $21,117 per student.
Jim Beasley Jr. has carried on his father's tradition of giving by founding the Beasley Firm Foundation. The foundation has given away money to provide day care support for single mothers receiving cancer treatments, as well as to repair underprivileged peoples' homes and playgrounds. The firm also has a holiday tradition of giving away turkeys to needy families.
The Beasley Firm is also the major sponsor of the Beasley School of Law's "LEAP" program, which promotes educational advancement with area high school students by having them stage mock trial competitions. Schools across the Commonwealth participate, and every year the finals for Philadelphia schools are held at the Beasley School of Law.
